How to Send Bitcoin With Bitchat: A Simple Guide

October 24, 2026

What if you could send money to someone without relying on a traditional payment app or even an internet connection? That’s the idea behind Bitchat, a decentralized messaging app created by Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter (now X).

Bitchat started as an offline messaging tool that uses Bluetooth to connect nearby phones. Its newer Android releases also support Cashu, a Bitcoin-related eCash technology that allows users to transfer digital value through tokens.

But how does Bitchat work, and can you actually send Bitcoin with it? Here’s what you need to know.

What Is Bitchat?

Bitchat is a peer-to-peer messaging app designed to work without traditional centralized servers or phone number registration.

Unlike WhatsApp or Telegram, Bitchat can send messages between nearby devices using a Bluetooth mesh network. Other participating phones can relay messages, helping them travel beyond the range of a single Bluetooth connection.

Its main features include:

  • Offline messaging: Communicate with nearby users without Wi-Fi or cellular internet when a Bluetooth mesh connection is available.
  • Private conversations: The app supports end-to-end encryption for private messages.
  • No phone number required: Start chatting without registering a traditional phone number.
  • Decentralized communication: Messages can travel through participating devices rather than depending entirely on centralized messaging servers.
  • Cashu support on Android: Compatible versions can recognize Cashu eCash tokens and provide a /pay command to help users access payment or redemption flows.

Bitchat is an open-source project associated with Jack Dorsey, who has also supported Bitcoin and decentralized internet technologies.

Can You Send Bitcoin With Bitchat?

Yes, but there is an important distinction.

Bitchat’s Bitcoin-related payment functionality includes support for Cashu eCash tokens in its Android 2.0.1 release. These tokens represent value backed by Bitcoin through a Cashu mint.

Instead of sending a conventional Bitcoin transaction directly to a blockchain address, a user can share a Cashu token with another person.

The recipient can then redeem the token through a compatible external wallet or supported web flow.

Think of it as handing someone a digital cash token rather than broadcasting a standard Bitcoin transaction to the Bitcoin network.

However, Cashu is not the same as holding and transferring Bitcoin directly on-chain. The system involves a mint, and users should understand the associated trust and redemption risks before sending money.

Also, Bitchat’s Bluetooth messaging capability does not automatically mean every Bitcoin payment can be completed offline. Payment functionality depends on the supported token, wallet and redemption process.

How to Send Bitcoin-Related Payments With Bitchat

If you want to experiment with Bitchat’s Cashu payment functionality, follow these steps.

Step 1: Download Bitchat

Install Bitchat from a legitimate app-store listing or the project’s official source code and releases.

Official project resources:

  • iOS: Bitchat on the App Store
  • Android: Bitchat Android releases on GitHub

Check that you are installing the genuine application and a version that supports the features you need.

Step 2: Connect With the Recipient

Open Bitchat and find the person you want to communicate with.

You can use its messaging features to exchange information. Nearby users can communicate over Bluetooth mesh, while other messaging features may use an internet connection.

Make sure you have identified the correct recipient before sharing anything valuable.

Step 3: Prepare a Cashu Token

You need a valid Cashu token and a compatible redemption method to use the app’s Cashu functionality.

Cashu tokens are typically obtained through a compatible Cashu wallet or mint.

The exact process depends on the wallet and the version of Bitchat you are using. Bitchat’s payment feature should not be confused with a built-in, conventional Bitcoin wallet.

Step 4: Share the Token Through Bitchat

In supported Android versions, Bitchat can recognize Cashu tokens and provides a /pay command.

Use the payment interface and supported token-sharing flow available in your installed version.

The recipient can then use a compatible wallet or web flow to redeem the token.

Important: Anyone who obtains a bearer Cashu token may be able to redeem it. Only share it with the intended recipient, and never post it publicly.

Step 5: Confirm the Payment

Ask the recipient to confirm that the token was successfully redeemed.

Do not assume that a message being delivered means the payment has settled. If the token fails to redeem, check the wallet’s instructions and the mint’s status before attempting another payment.

Does Bitchat Work Without Internet?

This is one of Bitchat’s most interesting features.

Its Bluetooth mesh messaging system can operate without internet access when participating devices form a connection between the sender and recipient.

However, there is a difference between sending a message offline and completing a Bitcoin-related payment.

A Cashu token can be shared as data, but obtaining tokens, redeeming them and interacting with a mint may require connectivity or other compatible infrastructure.

Therefore, Bitchat should not be treated as a guaranteed way to complete Bitcoin payments anywhere without internet.

Is Bitchat Safe for Sending Bitcoin?

Bitchat offers privacy-focused messaging features, but users should take care when handling digital money.

Keep these points in mind:

  • Verify the recipient: Make sure you are sharing the token with the right person.
  • Protect your tokens: Anyone who obtains a redeemable token may be able to spend it.
  • Understand Cashu: A Cashu token is not identical to a self-custodied Bitcoin transaction recorded directly on the blockchain.
  • Check redemption: Confirm that the recipient can redeem the token before sending a significant amount.
  • Start small: Test the process with a small amount before transferring more.

As with any experimental or evolving payment feature, review the latest documentation before relying on it for important transactions.

Final Thoughts

Bitchat is more than an ordinary messaging app. Its combination of offline-capable communication and Cashu support points toward a future where people can exchange messages and digital value through decentralized tools.

Still, it is important to understand what the technology actually does. Bluetooth mesh messaging, Cashu token transfers and conventional Bitcoin transactions are three different things.

If you want to experiment with Bitchat, start by learning how its messaging system works, then explore Cashu payments with a compatible wallet and a small amount.
